Solving the problems of food security and sustainability: the emerging place-making agenda
Terry Marsden has delivered the keynote address at the annual Canadian Association for Food Studies in Waterloo, Canada with the title: 'Solving the problems of food security and sustainability: the emerging place-making agenda'. This was followed by a presentation in Toronto at Food Share, a non-profit community organization whose vision is Good Healthy Food for All. Food Share is the largest urban food hub in North America, based in Toronto it serves over 130,000 nutritious meals a day to schools and community sites, and good food boxes every day to over 3000 customers. Other speakers at the conference included Debbie Field, Food Share Director and Professor Alison Blay-Palmer, Wilfred Laurier University, Waterloo.
The Sustainable Places Research Institute is also collaborating on a series of research grants funded by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture (OMAFRA) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), led by Alison Blay Palmer and involving a wide range of stakeholders and academics from across the Province. A new partnership grant to continue the work on researching the development of food hubs (over 170 are being studied across the province) was also announced during Terry's stay at the two day research coordination meeting on the project.
