Governance for sustainable development: what can we learn from others?

This was the subject for discussion at a recent briefing given to Assembly Members and researchers at the National Assembly for Wales. Professor Susan Baker highlighted some of her research looking at governance for sustainable development (SD) in other countries as part of a regular series of Cardiff University briefing sessions.

The Welsh Government has stated it wants a stronger governance frame work for SD and will be legislating to make SD the central organising principle of public bodies in Wales. It will also establish an independent body, to provide support for those bodies to reflect Welsh interests and needs.

Susan outlined some of the challenges and opportunities associated with governing for SD and some of the lessons and experiences from other countries that have done this.  Learning from the experience of others will be vital as we continue to engage with the legislative process and to realise the benefits of creating a more sustainable future.

The White Paper consultation on proposals for a SD Bill has now closed, and the SD Bill will be introduced into the National Assembly for Wales for scrutiny in the autumn this year.
