Cardiff University students represent Great Britain at World University Championships

10 Awst 2016

World University Championships

The FISU World University Championships are part of the sporting events of the International University Federation. Alternating with the Summer and Winter Universiades, they are organised every even-numbered year and consist of the best sporting students across the world. It is an incredible opportunity for students to represent Great Britain on an International stage.

So far this year, five Cardiff University students have been selected to represent Great Britain at the World University Championships. Most recently Rebecca Girling who graduated Cardiff University last year, has been selected for the Great Britain rowing team. Rebecca will be competing in the women’s double sculls with teammate Emily Carmichael. The 31 strong team will head to Poland with competition due to start on the 2nd September 2016.

Our shooting duo, Dean Bale and Coral Kennerley, will be in action at the World University Shooting Championships which are also being held in Poland from the 14th-18th September 2016. Dean will be competing in the rifle competition whilst Coral will compete in the pistol competition. The duo will be accompanied by three other students competing in a variety of shooting disciplines.

Last month Robyn Wilkins represented GB at the World University rugby 7’s championships held in Swansea. Great Britain failed to progress to the finals after being beaten by the eventual winners France in the final Pool A match. However Robyn helped the GB women finish a fine 5th in the competition.

Although a couple of months back now, two Cardiff University cross country members represented Great Britain at the World University Cross Country Championships. Beth Hawling and Dan Nash travelled to Italy where they finished 12th and 30th respectively. Beth helped the women clinch silver in the team standings.

Well done to our three students who have already competed and we wish Coral, Dean and Rebecca the best of luck at the upcoming World University Championships!
