Head of School lends voice to language learning debate

4 Chwefror 2016

Professor Claire Gorrara appears on the BBC programme, The Wales Report

Head of School, Professor Claire Gorrara appeared on the BBC programme,The Wales Report this week to discuss the recent decline in the number of pupils in Wales who are opting to learn a modern foreign language.

Professor Gorrara attributes the decline in Wales to the misconception that languages are more difficult than other subjects and that students and their parents aren’t made aware of the intercultural benefits that learning a language can have on a child, not only linguistically but also in understanding the world more generally.

The great news is that we’re being proactive here at the School of Modern Languages and are working with a number of partners, including local schools to promote and explain language learning to future generations.

The Wales Report can be viewed here with the first segment of the programme dedicated to this subject. To watch Professor Gorrara specifically please start viewing from 7 minutes onwards.
