Themes

Our research covers three main themes, with four cross-cutting areas of study.

Brain tissue

Psychosis and major affective disorders

We are working to learn how genetic and environmental factors interact to cause major psychotic and mood disorders, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Young teenage boy

Developmental psychiatry

We are researching the causes of child and adolescent depression and how genetics and environment interact to lead to developmental disorders like ADHD and autism.

Elderly man

Neurodegenerative disorders

We are working to develop better treatments and support for conditions including Alzheimer's, Huntington's and Parkinson's.

Abstract image to represent genetics

Biostatistics and bioinformatics

We analyse large volumes of biological data to help understand the causes of mental-health related diseases.

Neurons under a microscope

Models and mechanisms

Our work aims to reveal the biological mechanisms by which genes and life events influence our brain function and behaviour.

Brain scans

Neuropsychiatric imaging

We investigate the effects of genes on brain structure and function and on behaviour, as well as their interaction with the environment.
