9 January 2013
Professor Huw Beynon of the Cardiff School of Social Sciences will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters by Durham University on 11th January 2013.
Professor Beynon joined Durham University in 1977 and spent the next ten years there. It was a momentous period in the political economy of the UK and one that was to have a profound effect on his research. Once in Durham, he researched the mining trade unions and communities, which led to his involvement in contesting the Government’s policy of pit closures. He has since become known as a distinguished industrial sociologist of international repute. Professor Beynon was nominated to receive the honour by Professor Ray Hudson of Durham University’s Geography Department.
Professor Beynon was Director of the Cardiff School of Social Sciences for a number of years before his retirement from the post in 2009. He has since continued to work within the School.
