In the original ‘Third
Wave of Science Studies’ paper, Harry Collins and I identified the
need for a new kind of science studies – the third wave – that
was to be called Studies
in Expertise and Experience (SEE). The aim of SEE would be to develop
and test the categorisation of expertise that underpins the Periodic
Table of Expertises. In August 2007, this emergent research programme
took more concrete form in a workshop – or SEESHOP–
held at Cardiff.
The programme included papers on expertise in a wide range of settings presented by scholars with backgrounds ranging from philosophy to ecology and psychology to physics. The programme and summaries of all the papers are available on the ALL @ SEEwebsite.
We also hope that a selection of the papers will appear in a special issue.
The workshop also saw the beta version of the Imitation
Game software being written for us by Martin Hall (click
here for a more academic discussion of the same research). Although still
being developed at the moment, we anticipate that it will be completed by
the end of 2007. We hope that the program will become a resource used by not
just by ourselves but also others to investigate interactional
expertise in an ever wider set of topics.
