Architectural Engineering (BEng/MEng)

Are you looking for a career which is creative, challenging and fulfilling? Then our degree scheme in Architectural Engineering may well suit your needs. It is an engineering degree with a human face which combines the challenges and inventiveness of the modern building industry with a flair for originality and creativity

The creation of buildings is a complex operation requiring the skills of many disciplines. Typically, the design team would include architects, town planners, structural, environmental and building services engineers and landscape architects, whilst the building process would be supervised by construction professionals with many specialist sub-contractors. Historically, these groupings have all come from independent specialist firms who then pool their knowledge in order to achieve a solution to the job in hand. This often leads to misunderstandings and inefficient ways of achieving the required result, which can mean that jobs are not completed on time or to budget. This state of affairs was clearly recognised by the great engineer, Ove Arup, In 1970 when he articulated the need for a co-ordinated, multi-disciplinary approach, speaking of his company:

"...We are then led to the ideal of ‘Total Architecture', in collaboration with other like-minded firms or, still better, on our own. This means expanding our field of activity into adjoining fields - architecture, planning, ground engineering, environmental engineering, computer programming, etc, and the planning and organisation of the work on site…"

Many companies have moved towards this ideal over the intervening years, as have the many professional institutions involved in the construction industry.

The Architectural Engineering degree schemes at Cardiff also aspire to this ideal.

The Architectural Engineering degree schemes offered at Cardiff provide a broad based learning environment which will enable you to comprehend the underlying process of building construction. You will then be taught the role of each of the individual professional groupings and the problems they most commonly face. Particular attention is focused on structural engineering and architectural studies which along with modules on the theory and practice of management, form an important part of the degree schemes.

Employment

The Architectural Engineering degree schemes in Cardiff are recognised as being of very high quality. This, coupled to the fact that Cardiff is recognised as being one of Britain's leading centres for the teaching of engineering, means that our graduates readily obtain good quality jobs. Most often Architectural Engineers find employment in multi-disciplinary design practices where professionals from a variety of disciplines will work. In addition, some of our graduates decide to work for traditional architectural practices or firms of structural engineers, whilst others prefer contracting and onsite management, thus providing a key link between the design engineers and architects.
