Cardiff University renews strategic partnership with NGET for another 5 years

Cardiff University has been selected as a Strategic Partner with National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) for the period April 2026 to April 2031, granting us continued access to an innovation budget of £133 million.
Negotiated by the Advanced High Voltage Research Centre (AHIVE) in the School of Engineering under the leadership of Professor Manu Haddad’s, the strategic partnership with NGET has been renewed for another 5 years starting 1 April 2026. The partnership includes all university schools.
The areas of research and innovations are:
- Future network design (UHV, HVDC)
- Asset performance and capacity unlock
- Effective outage management
- Industrial and business connection acceleration
- Faster network build and maintenance
- Network intelligence and digitalisation
We are immensely proud that Cardiff University has been selected as a Strategic Partner for this important five-year programme, recognising the expertise and impact developed through the School of Engineering’s Advanced High Voltage Research Centre. It will create exceptional opportunities for researchers across the University to translate pioneering ideas into practical innovations that support more resilient, intelligent and sustainable energy systems.
Dozens of Cardiff University research projects have been funded by the NGET partnership since it was first established in 2005. A recent study identified and quantified key elements in the safety and protection of high voltage cable circuits in tunnels, such as were used in phase 2 of the London Power Tunnels.
