Modelling diffuse pollution from agriculture at the catchment scale

Florian’s PhD research at the Hydro-environmental Research Centre (HRC), Cardiff University, focuses on the study of farming practices and their impact on the water quality of rivers and receiving coastal waters. Florian applies the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) watershed model and Cardiff University’s Depth Integrated Velocity and Solute Transport (DIVAST) model to the River Severn and Severn Estuary, UK. His study aims to establish a refined catchment to coast modelling approach which enables catchment managers to monitor and control the progressive reduction of pollutant emission from diffuse agricultural sources - thereby supporting the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive (EU WFD) in Wales.
