Our Business Management with a Foundation Year programme provides a supportive and intellectually engaging route into university study.

You’ll explore some of the big questions at the heart of the social sciences: how societies are organised, why inequalities persist, how communities and organisations are shaped, and how social, political and economic forces influence the world around us. You’ll also consider how the social sciences help us understand and respond to contemporary challenges such as climate change, global inequality, digital transformation and social justice.

You’ll be introduced to a range of perspectives from sociology, politics, business studies, economics, geography, social policy and related disciplines.

You’ll go on to explore the varied ways in which organisations respond to the rapidly changing demands of contemporary business.

Our emphasis on sustainable management, combined with the core business principles that matter for global industry, mean you’ll be well prepared to successfully lead organisations in an increasingly complex, digital, and interconnected world.

You’ll gain key skills in management, accounting, marketing, and supply chains, together with the entrepreneurial mindset needed to tackle social and environment challenges. Alongside subject knowledge, you’ll develop essential professional soft skills and capabilities.

From debates and collaborative projects to case studies and applied social analysis, you’ll see how social science ideas help make sense of the world beyond the classroom.

Course structure

You’ll study for a minimum of 4 years, including your integrated foundation year.

In each year of the programme, you’ll study 120 credits from a blend of core and optional modules.

The modules shown are an example of the typical curriculum and will be reviewed prior to the 2026/2027 academic year. The final modules will be published by September 2026.

Foundation/ preliminary year

The foundation year is designed to build confidence, academic capability and subject-specific understanding through expert teaching, tailored support and an inclusive learning environment.

You’ll study 6 core modules of 20 credits each, carefully designed to prepare you for success on your chosen Business Management programme.

Year one

On successful completion of the foundation year, you’ll progress into one of our Business and Management programmes. Your options include:

  • Business Management (BSc)
  • Business Management with International Management (BSc)
  • Business Management with Marketing (BSc)
  • Business Management with Supply Chain Management (BSc)

Year 1 is common across all Business Management programmes: you’ll study 6 core modules that introduce our 4 main subjects - management, marketing, operations and accounting. You’ll gain a broad understanding of the modern business environment, including a focus on sustainability and the important role that people play within organisations.

Throughout the year you’ll work both independently and in groups on a variety of industry relevant assignments. You’ll refine, extend, and develop your appreciation of the course content, while gaining important transferrable skills in analysis, communication and teamworking.

On completion of the year, you’ll have developed a confident understanding of the main principles of business management that will underpin your success in subsequent years of study.

Year two

Year 2 has been designed to support your development towards becoming a socially responsible, critical, and confident leader.

Core modules will deepen your understanding of business management, developing your capabilities to make evidence-informed decisions in management, marketing, operations and accounting. You’ll also begin to tailor your degree content in line with your aspirations and interests through the selection of a specialist optional module.

Year three

Year 3 is all about helping you become a specialist in Business Management.

You’ll devote half the year to developing your expertise in strategy, management, and supply chains, before focusing on our specialist grand challenges & employability module. The remainder of your time will be spent studying your chosen optional modules.

Optional modules allow you to shape your degree in the way that best suits your career aspirations. You’ll be supported in making your module choices and designing a degree that holds you in good stead for your future career.

The University is committed to providing a wide range of module options where possible, but please be aware that whilst every effort is made to offer choice this may be limited in certain circumstances. This is due to the fact that some modules have limited numbers of places available, which are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, while others have minimum student numbers required before they will run, to ensure that an appropriate quality of education can be delivered; some modules require students to have already taken particular subjects, and others are core or required on the programme you are taking. Modules may also be limited due to timetable clashes, and although the University works to minimise disruption to choice, we advise you to seek advice from the relevant School on the module choices available.

Learning and assessment

You’ll be taught through a mixture of lectures and small group teaching - classes, seminars, workshops or tutorials. Lectures provide an overview of the module content while classes and workshops give you the opportunity to practice techniques, discuss ideas, apply concepts and consolidate your understanding.

You’ll also benefit from guest presentations by practitioners, enabling you to relate your academic learning to real-world examples.

Our teaching is heavily informed by research; we combine academic rigour with practical relevance, giving you access to up-to-date real-life examples and scenarios and critical business thinking.

How will I be assessed?

Our Business Management (BSc) programmes draw on a diverse range of both rigorous and authentic assessment methods, equipping you with the knowledge and skills you need for your future career.

Recognising the way in which real-world businesses operate, our assessment strategy comprises both individual and collaborative assessments. Where appropriate, assessments mirror the activities which would be expected in the workplace; this includes pitches, reports, and presentations.

All modules have formative assessment opportunities, allowing you to get valuable feedback before completing summative assessment pieces. You’ll also receive timely feedback on your summative assessments, either in writing or orally. This feedback will help you understand your achievements and see where there may be opportunities for enhancement in future work.

What skills will I practise and develop?

The Learning Outcomes for this Programme describe what you will achieve by the end of your programme at Cardiff University and identify the knowledge and skills that you will develop. They will also help you to understand what is expected of you.
