Public Health
These blending-learning modules offer Continuing Professional Development (CPD) education to professionals, from a range of health and social care settings, the opportunity to explore high quality, integrated, multi-disciplinary learning for leadership and problem-solving across the broad field of public health.
Standalone modules are an excellent way to enhance your knowledge and contribute to your continuing professional development portfolio. Successful completion of each module will provide you with institutional credit, but the standalone modules listed here are not designed to build towards a specific award (e.g. PgCert/PgDip/MSc). If you are interested in study leading to a named award, please view our Masters in Public Health (MPH).
Each standalone 20 credit Level 7 module involves face-to-face sessions delivered as lead lectures followed by small group teaching exercises or practical sessions and several are supported by online learning materials. Statistical methodology is taught alongside Stata, a software package used to compute statistics. This enables participants to learn theoretical concepts and their application.
This module aims to enable public health postgraduates to become informed consumers of statistical expertise. The module takes you through the theoretical concepts and practical application of medical statistics. Data analysis and interpretation skills are developed through the use of statistical software packages and analysis exercises and interpretation of published results.

This module aims to enable you to engage effectively in health improvement at micro (individual/community), meso (community/national) or macro (national/international) level, respond constructively to the multidimensional nature of health needs, It will enable you to critically appraise research and policy documents from a variety of sources, and maintain an ethical and principled approach to research and action.

This module is designed to help you understand the potential impact of the environment on public health and the principles of risk assessment and risk mitigation. It also allows you to develop critical appreciation of communicable diseases of public health importance, population surveillance methods, methods for outbreak investigation, and the epidemiological basis of control strategies.

This module allows you to appreciate the pattern of disease and mortality globally, the health impact of globalization both on developing and developed countries, and international activities and structures designed to address these issues.

By the end of this module you will be able to understand basic epidemiological principles, methods for measuring health and disease, and different research methodologies used in health intelligence and their contribution to the understanding of health and wellbeing.

This module is suitable for those with existing epidemiological and statistical knowledge and will introduce you to their practical application. By the end of this module you will be able to demonstrate how specific epidemiological principles and methods may be applied to a variety of aspects of public health practice.

This module will enable you to understand how health services are planned, commissioned, organised, managed and financed. It allows you to improve your professional competence for a range of roles in public health in the UK and elsewhere, working in a range of different organisational structures. The module has a strong focus on developing familiarity with important health economic concepts and applying these concepts to inform the planning of health services.

This module is designed to give you the opportunity to learn a range of theoretical management models and explore their use in both public health and health service practice. You will explore assessing health needs and related topics in greater depth. It will provide you with the opportunity to cover a range of learning objectives of the UK Faculty of Public Health ‘Part A’ examination.

We reserve the right to cancel the delivery of a standalone module. This could happen if a course is under-subscribed or if there is a change in circumstances. This is due to the fact that some modules have minimum student numbers required before they can run. This is to ensure that an appropriate quality of education can be delivered. When this happens we will issue a full or partial refund depending on whether any classes took place.
Entry requirements
In addition to satisfying the University’s minimum entry requirements, including English language requirements, applicants must have the following:
- 2:1 in a relevant undergraduate subject such as dentistry, environmental health, health information, health planning, health promotion, health service evaluation, health service management, social work, medicine, nutrition, and nursing.
