Funding for Part 1 (BSc) and Part 2 (MArch) of Architecture
Subject to terms and conditions of your funding body you may qualify for undergraduate funding for both BSc Architectural Studies (Part 1) and MArch Architecture (Part 2).
Funding for Part 1: BSc Architectural Studies (3 years)
Subject to funding body terms and conditions, students studying the BSc Architectural Studies (3 years), Part 1, are eligible to apply for undergraduate funding based on where they were resident before they started their course.
More detail can be found in our Loans and Grants information about how and when to apply for the funding available for Part 1.
If you have any questions about this funding, your eligibility or how to apply please don’t hesitate to contact the Student Funding and Advice Team.
Funding for Part 2: MArch Architecture (2 years)
Depending on your circumstances you may qualify for undergraduate or postgraduate funding for the MArch, Part 2, course.
Undergraduate funding
Students undertaking Part 2 of Architecture can qualify for undergraduate funding so long as they satisfy the eligibility terms and conditions of their funding body which include the following criteria:
- You have not withdrawn from the Part 1 course
- You have not changed your mode of study (ie, changed from part time to full time or vice versa)
- You have not taken more than a 3 year gap between completing Part 1 and commencing Part 2 (*Please see note below for exceptions).
If you satisfy the eligibility criteria then you could be eligible to receive undergraduate funding for each year of Part 2.
*If you have taken more than a 3 year gap between Part 1 and Part 2 then your funding body has discretion to award undergraduate funding for Part 2 if you can evidence that you maintained a connection with architecture during that time; for example if you were working in the field. Your funding body can also consider any compelling personal reasons that caused a delay in returning to Part 2. If you have taken more than a 3 year gap and would like to discuss this, please don’t hesitate to contact the Student Funding and Advice Team.
Applying for undergraduate funding for MArch Architecture, Part 2
You will need to apply to the funding body that you were under during Part 1 of your course.
You will also need to apply on a PN1 form (for new students) and we would advise that you apply via the paper form. This is because the online application would likely deem you ineligible due to previous study but this would be incorrect.
You can access the paper PN1 form from your specific funding body when available:
Please note that you need to use the form for the correct academic year.
When you apply for undergraduate funding for the MArch, Part 2 course, you will be asked to confirm details about the course. Please note the following two important points:
- To be considered for undergraduate funding the relevant course details that you should include as part of your application are:
- Architecture (Part 2)
- SLC Code: 1006801
- Year 1 of the MArch course for student finance purposes is classed as a Work Based Learning year and NOT a placement year. In your funding application you will be asked to confirm information about your course related to the course type and whether you will be spending time during term time on a work placement. Please answer that you are a full-time undergraduate spending most of each term at University or college
If you do not answer the above questions as indicated this will affect the funding your funding body will assess you for.
If you encounter any difficulties with your funding please don’t hesitate to contact the Student Funding and Advice Team.
What if I don’t qualify for undergraduate funding?
If you do not qualify for undergraduate funding because you do not satisfy the eligibility terms and conditions of your funding body then you may be eligible for postgraduate funding instead. The funding available to you will depend on where you were ordinarily resident before you start your course.
Please be aware that postgraduate funding is for the length of the course and is not per year. As the MArch is a 2 year course, this means that the postgraduate funding available to you would be divided across both years of the course.
Applying for postgraduate funding for MArch Architecture, Part 2
To be considered for postgraduate funding the relevant course details that you should include as part of your application are:
- Architecture
- SLC Code: 202365
