Supporting innovation

We believe cross-discipline collaboration is key to unlocking new technology and techniques.

Interdisciplinary collaboration makes a real difference in solving some of the world's most pressing concerns.

Welsh Crucible

Led by Cardiff University, Welsh Crucible is an award winning programme of professional development for the future research leaders of Wales. Now in its fourth year, the programme supports research-inspired innovation
and cross-disciplinary collaboration in Wales.

Each year, 30 researchers are selected to participate in a series of residential workshops or "skills labs" where participants explore how:

  • they can benefit from working with researchers in other disciplines
  • their research can have greater impact
  • they can build international research careers in Wales.

Welsh Crucible won the Times Higher Education Award for Outstanding Contribution to Leadership Development in 2013, with judges commenting that it delivers 'game-changing impacts on attitudes and behaviours'.

Cardiff Futures

Cardiff Futures is a unique opportunity for academic staff to explore how they might shape the University's future. It provides opportunities for career development and for staff to work collaboratively with other disciplines. The programme awards participants a small amount of funding to work on an interdisciplinary group project.

Innovation Network

Our Innovation Network was formed to support cross-sector innovation by creating better links between business and our academics. Our researchers' skills and knowledge are applied to problems in industry, allowing us to turn creative ideas into successful commercial products.
