Ethnography, Culture and Interpretive Analysis Research Group

The Cardiff Ethnography Group has served as an active forum for research collaboration and scholarly activity related to ethnography, interpretive analysis and associated fields for some forty years.

It is internationally recognised as a centre of research excellence and, also, of practical pedagogy in ethnography. This is manifest in the founding of the SAGE journal Qualitative Research –  currently edited by active group members – by the group’s founders, Paul Atkinson and Sara Delamont.

The focus of the group’s work is to provide a forum for colleagues, whether they be students or staff in Cardiff or, indeed, national and international visitor, to present their ethnographic work and studies in a critical and supportive environment.

The Group meets regularly and provides opportunities for a range of activities including the development of ‘foreshadowed ideas’, work in progress, and the preparation and delivery of more polished arguments and research findings.

The group has also acted as an important opportunity for colleagues to receive feedback on the development of research grant applications at various stages. Moreover, the ethnographic and qualitative methodological expertise of members of the Cardiff Ethnography Group have made pivotal contributions to a number of successful research projects and centres in the past including the ESRC funded QUALITI and WISERD and continue to provide training and development opportunities in and through the Wales DTC and ESRC recognised MSc SSRM.
