We develop tomorrow's electronic and photonic devices. Our aim is to underpin a world-leading cluster for compound semiconductor research and manufacturing in south Wales at our world-leading facilities.
About
We focus on semiconductor material and device physics from theory and experiment to application, underpinned by world-leading facilities at our Institute for Compound Semiconductors. Our work is guided by government strategy and we are a major founding partner of the South Wales Semiconductor Cluster.
Semiconductors constitute the foundations of all electronic devices. We work to make current devices more efficient and develop new functionalities to improve our lives and create a more sustainable future, for example:
- developing sensors and communications for driverless cars
- creating the internet of things
- improving the efficiency of our solar farms
- developing better electric vehicles.
Our group leverages the strong visibility provided by the Institute for Compound Semiconductors (ICS) and the wider South Wales Compound Semiconductor cluster. This collaboration gives us access to advanced, reproducible fabrication capabilities and, by minimizing variability in the fabrication process, means we can focus on innovation.
Our focus is the physics that underpins the use of the four main material families in photonics, electronics and quantum-related applications:
- gallium nitride (GaN)
- gallium arsenide (GaAs) indium phosphide (InP)
- indium arsenide (InAs)
- gallium antimonide (GaSb)
We also work with some emerging materials such as aluminium nitride (AlN) and gallium oxide (Ga2O3).
As well, our researchers focus on the integration of multiple materials and functions using compound semiconductors and associated materials to create new, innovative devices and superior performance in existing technologies.

Institute for Compound Semiconductors
We aim to position Cardiff as the European leader in compound semiconductor research, providing a platform where researchers and industry work together.
