Hodge Centre for Neuropsychiatric Immunology

microscope research

The Hodge Centre for Neuropsychiatric Immunology brings together expert researchers in both neuroscience and immunology to focus on the immune processes in mental health disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia.

Exciting research developments, many of which have been led by Cardiff University researchers, have revealed the importance of the brain's immune system in the development of conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. These discoveries can now provide us with new ways of understanding the causes of these disorders and open up the potential to develop novel treatments for them.

Studying the role of the immune system in brain functions such as memory and in disease is an exciting but challenging area of research. The Hodge Centre aims to:

  • train a cohort of scientists versed in both neuroscience and immunology
  • generate more cross-disciplinary research bringing together neuroscientists and immunologists
  • engage researchers and the public at large in this new way of thinking about brain diseases.

The Centre brings together researchers from across the separate fields of neuroscience and immunology in a linked programme of training, research and engagement.
