OPT052 - Primary Eye Care Practical

This module is particularly suitable for optometrists who have not practised in the UK and those that have had a career break from general optometric practice.

It builds on your learning from OPT051 Primary Eye Care Theory and aims to broaden your practical skillset in line with current UK professional standards. After you have completed the module you will be equipped with the latest practical, communication and decision-making skills to enhance your clinical investigation and management of patients presenting to primary eye care practice.

The module is divided into taught and practical components. The taught content has a strong focus on investigative techniques used to identify ocular pathology and inform clinical decision-making. This includes instructional content aimed at improving your ability to assess the adnexa and anterior eye, view the fundus, measure intra-ocular pressure and interpret visual field / optical coherence tomography output.

You will attend 2 contact days in Cardiff for in-person teaching and assessment. During the practical component you will receive hands-on training within our fully equipped clinic. Structured tutorials will primarily focus on slit lamp biomicroscopy, slit lamp binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy and Goldmann applanation tonometry. Other key skills practised include visual field and optical coherence tomography acquisition. You will also take part in discussion workshops with an emphasis on communication, clinical assessment and management/referral skills.

OPT051 Primary Eye Care Theory is a precursor for this module, which is available in semester 1. It is expected that students on module OPT052 have a basic skill level in the following techniques in order to be successful: slit lamp binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy, and Goldmann applanation tonometry.

On completion of the module a student should be able to:

  • critically assess the signs of eye disease via the application of advanced clinical techniques, whilst demonstrating an awareness of the limitations in your competency and the benefit of inter-professional collaboration
  • establish a critical understanding of visual field and optical coherence tomography output and use your own initiative when applying this knowledge to inform clinical decision making
  • demonstrate an experienced-informed and competent approach to the use and instillation of diagnostic drugs commonly applied to enhance clinical investigation in optometric practice
  • convey a critical awareness of current research/clinical management guidelines and their application to investigation, diagnosis and management of eye conditions

The module is taught via practical sessions, interactive webinars, on-line Xerte interactive presentations, and case discussion, and with supporting resources and references supplied.

The online content is via Learning Central, the University’s e-learning system. The contact days will be held towards the end of the semester.

You will examine a series of formative case-based decision-making scenarios, via a discussion board on Learning Central. You can interact with your peers and module tutors and present any clinical questions or other queries that come up throughout the term.

In addition, there will be two virtual webinars to discuss various aspects of the course content.

The module map which outlines key activities and dates is available via the module on Learning Central.

There are multiple choice questions at the end of each Xerte tutorial. These can be completed more than once and feedback regarding the correct answer will be provided on completion.

Summative

You will be assessed through:

  • oral presentation (30%), approx. 8 slides: You are required to submit a pre-recorded PowerPoint presentation detailing a patient case in primary eye care practice (ILO 2,4)
  • practical assessment (70%): You will be assessed using a series of objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) stations. This comprises five stations to test assessing and managing patients in primary eye care practice. (ILO 1,2,3,4)

The pass mark for each component is 50%. You must pass each individual assessment component to pass the module.

Marking criteria for this module is available in the Module information on Learning Central.
