RemakerSpace: Repairing, reusing and rethinking
20 October 2025
Located in Cardiff University’s Social Science Research Park (sbarc|spark), RemakerSpace is a pioneering facility dedicated to transforming how we design, make, consume, and dispose of goods.
Backed by £1 million in funding, including £600,000 from the Welsh Government’s Circular Economy Fund, this not-for-profit initiative is a collaboration between Cardiff Business School and the PARC Institute, with a mission to combat planned obsolescence and promote circularity across Wales and beyond.
Since opening in October 2022, RemakerSpace has become a vibrant community hub, engaging hundreds of students, staff, and external partners through hands-on workshops, pop-up events, and monthly crafter socials. It has also played a key role in Cardiff University’s Positive Health and Well-Being (PHEW) Fortnight, championing sustainability and creativity.
What RemakerSpace Offers
RemakerSpace is equipped with tools and technologies to support repair, reuse, and remanufacturing. The cutting-edge facilities include:
- An industry-standard 3D printing lab with advanced Additive Manufacturing technologies
- Virtual reality systems for visualising and prototyping repairs
- Electrical repair kits and testing tools
- Industrial and domestic sewing machines
- Traditional woodworking and crafting equipment
These resources are available to staff and students looking to explore sustainable design, repair broken items, or engage in creative projects. The space also supports external stakeholders, including community groups, charities, and businesses, offering access to equipment, training, and expert guidance.
Short Courses and Workshops
RemakerSpace also offers specialist short courses in 3D design and printing, innovation, and circular business strategies. Delivered by a multidisciplinary team of academics and technical experts, these sessions help organisations build sustainability into their operations.
For Cardiff Business School students curious about 3D printing, the RemakerSpace offers hands-on 3D printing induction courses where they will learn the basics and get started with their own creations.
These free sessions will run every Wednesday afternoon until December 17, 2025. For more information, visit the event page.
