The players from 1991 who reunite for every home Varsity game

25 April 2025

When Cardiff University play Swansea University there’s always a bit of atmosphere, but did you know that a slice of the noise might be down to the longstanding reunion taking place in the stands?

For John Brown (BArch 1994), Dai Duly (BScEcon 1991), Andy Davies (BEng 1992) and Chris Coates (LLB 1993) this year’s match at the Principality Stadium represented the latest in a tradition stretching back to their own triumphs in the red of Cardiff.

“Having played in the last Cardiff UAU winning team at Twickenham in 1991 (now BUCS) against Swansea University, the Varsity fixture holds a special place in the hearts of the boys who played around that time.”

“Every two years members of the ‘91 team get together again in Cardiff for the home fixture, share old stories of university life, vivid and probably embellished memories of particular games and, in particular, the fun we all had in the Tavern and the SU!”

Whilst this years’ match was perhaps not as competitive as years gone by due to a clash with a BUCS relegation game, the group had a great day out.

“We are amazed to see how university rugby has evolved over time and how the city turns red and green on a special day celebrated by all across every sport.”

The group of alumni now have their sights set on the game in 2027, the next to be played in Cardiff:

“We look forward to many more years and Varsity reunions in the future, rekindling the best of days and lifelong friendships and bonds - and creating new memories along the way.”
