Cardiff University strengthens international collaboration on cybersecurity research and knowledge exchange

The university was delighted to welcome the Governor of the State of Yucatan, Mauricio Vila Dosal, and his delegation to Cardiff recently to promote international collaboration and knowledge sharing between Wales and Mexico.

The visit, which took place on January 29th, showcased the university’s groundbreaking research into cybersecurity and net zero ecosystems, as well as providing the opportunity for collaboration between Wales and Yucatan in digital transformation and decarbonisation research and education; underscored by shared objectives and opportunities for mutual growth.

The delegation was given a guided tour of the university’s facilities at Abacws and sbarc|spark, including a visit to the School of Computer Science and Informatics, the Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research and Education, and the Cyber Innovation Hub. This was led by Professor Stuart Allen, Head of the School of Computer Science, along with Dr George Theodorakopoulos, Director of the Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research, and Dr Yulia Cherdantseva, Co-Director of the Digital Transformation Innovation Institute.

Following the tour, Professor Agustin Valera-Medina, Co-Director of the Net Zero Innovation Institute, delivered a compelling presentation on decarbonisation research, highlighting the potential applications of ammonia blends for zero-carbon gas in Yucatan.

A roundtable discussion with Welsh Government and industry partners, including PwC, Airbus, Thales Group, Tramshed Tech, and Alacrity Foundation, provided a platform for robust dialogue on pertinent issues, including the importance of promoting STEM and cyber careers to future generations.

Speaking at the roundtable, the Governor emphasised the importance of international collaboration in cybersecurity innovation and demonstrated the impact of cybersecurity projects undertaken in the Yucatan which have created improved educational opportunities for students, and pathways to improved employment options.

Mauricio Vila Dosal, Governor of the State of Yucatan, said: "There is great talent in Yucatan that is now embracing the opportunities presented by this Government for young people and entrepreneurs. We are committed to enhancing our capabilities by collaborating with the best."

A highlight of the day was the signing of a Letter of Intent, symbolising the commitment to future collaborations between the university’s School of Computer Sciences and Informatics and the Universidad Politecnica de Yucatan. This agreement is the first of its kind between Cardiff University and counterpart institutions in Mexico, and it is hoped this will propel university research onto a global stage, as well as helping strengthen higher education in Yucatan, and increasing educational opportunities for its students.

Echoing those sentiments, Dr Yulia Cherdantseva, Co-Director of the Digital Transformation Innovation Institute, said: “The success of this visit demonstrates Cardiff University’s growing international reputation in cyber security research and education, and more broadly in digital transformation."
