School of Medicine achieves outstanding results in REF 2021

92% of research activity in the School of Medicine in Cardiff is officially world-leading or internationally excellent, according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 results published today.
The latest independent assessment of research quality across UK higher education institutions also showed that the research environment score for the School has achieved a significant rise since REF 2014, demonstrating our continued commitment to research culture.
Focused on biomedical science, clinical translation, and experimental medicine, our research spans across many areas including population medicine, psychiatric and neurological disorders, cancer, immunology, infectious and immune-mediated diseases, and genetic disorders among others.
The case studies submitted covered a broad range of health-related conditions and issues, from developing global resources for improved diagnosis of disease, to embedding new decision-making models and creating a ‘Virtual Hospital’ for Wales.
The entire School research endeavours were submitted across three of the available Units of Assessment – Clinical Medicine; Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy; and Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience. Find out more about each of these Units of Assessment.
The strong results are testament to the hard work of researchers across the School. We foster an inclusive, diverse and collaborative research community - reflective of this, we submitted 100% of our eligible staff for assessment.
