Student-supervisor collaboration wins big

5 December 2017

Rick Delbridge

A Professor of Organizational Studies from Cardiff Business School and his former PhD student have won a prestigious award at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in Atlanta, Georgia.

Professor Rick Delbridge and Dr Jingqi Zhu, now a lecturer in International Management at Newcastle University Business School, picked up the Best Critical Paper on International Business award sponsored by the journal Critical Perspectives on International Business.

Professor Delbridge supervised Dr Zhu’s PhD study at Cardiff and the resulting research thesis which examined two Chinese firms with operations in Japan.

Their paper, entitled ‘Infantilisation and ‘Tough Love’ in the Chinese Workplace: Towards a New Form of Paternalism’, is an extension of this work and discusses the management of Chinese workers in China and Japan.

Through an in-depth, exploratory case study, the researchers found evidence of a distinctive form of paternalism in the workplace which is manifested in management’s attempts to infantilise the workers and mobilise a ‘tough love’ approach in their management.

Professor Delbridge said: “It is very pleasing to receive this award at the AoM meeting which is the largest and highest profile conference for management researchers...”

“And it is particularly special since this paper is based on the research conducted by one of my PhD students and it is always rewarding to see former students have success.”
