I have recently joined Cardiff after working for seven years at the ISIS neutron and muon source as an instrument scientist on the EMU muon spectrometer. I am interested in magnetic systems and study them using magnetometry and central facility techniques, which include muons, neutrons and X-rays. I intend to carry on working at these international facilities and to build an ultra low temperature (<100mK) magnetic lab in Cardiff to compliment these investigations. I have in the past spent a lot of time investigating frustrated systems; including spin ice which has recently been described as an emergent source of magnetic monpoles in a condensed matter setting. I also investigate correlated electron systems in both bulk and thin films, an area which has great potential technological applications.
