I am a member of the Collaborative Online Social Media Observatory (COSMOS). I am an expert in digital sociology, digital social research, social interaction online, emotions online, and elderly and social media.

I am the convenor of the module "Digital Society: Theory, Method and Data". I also teach in several other undergraduate modules of SOCSI and supervise undergraduate dissertations.
My research interests are: interpersonal communication and emotions on the social web, mixed research methods in digital sociology, the role of the web 2.0 and semantic technologies in health and well-being of the elderly; and Emergency Management Agencies' usage of social media. I am also interested in exploring methods to use the "big data" produced by Social Media for social sciences. My doctoral thesis looked at hypertextuality and interaction in art-work. This ties with my interest in data visualisation and in making the presentation of the 'big' and complex data provided by the web 2.0 in more intuitive comprehensive and readable ways.
During the past years I have conducted research in interdisciplinary settings, working with computer scientists, engineers and social scientists. In 2012-13 I was a research fellow in a EU funded project (Disaster 2.0) enquiring the role of Social Media and its adoption by public sector organisations for risk and crisis communication.
My research has been funded by a number of organisations. In 2009 I received a grant from the Spanish Ministry of Education to undertake a research project entitled "Everyday life on the Internet: interpersonal communications and emotions in web 2.0". In December 2012, I was awarded a highly competitive grant by the LaCaixa Foundation to study the contribution of web 2.0 technologies to well-being, with a particular focus on the case of older people. My research has been published in Qualitative Research and the Journal of Education Policy.
