Mervyn Murch is an Emeritus Professor at Cardiff Law School, UK, where he has been based since 1993. He read Jurisprudence at the University of Oxford and obtained postgraduate qualifications in Applied Social Studies at Bristol University where he previously taught and established a socio-legal centre for family studies. He was appointed a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2007 for services to the family justice system.
His 40-year research career has focused on the inter-disciplinary work of the family justice system and has contributed to policy and practice developments and to law reform in divorce, adoption and child protection.
He served on a number of government committees including the Lord Chancellors' Legal Aid Advisory Committee (1978-1985) and the Department of Health Working Party on Guardian Ad Litem Panel Administration (1987-1988) and the Department of Health Children's Research Liaison Committee (1984-1993). He was also a member of the President of the Family Division's International Family Law Committee and Interdisciplinary Committee (the forerunner to the current Family Justice Council). In Cardiff he chaired the Launch Steering Committee for an Interdisciplinary Family Studies Research Centre which was established in 1998 as a joint venture between Cardiff University and the University of Wales College of Medicine. He continues to give evidence and advice to government committees concerning family justice matters.
