Dr Wakefield is an Honorary Research Fellow of the Department of Politics and International Relations. He completed his PhD at the School of European Languages, Translation and Politics in 2013. Since then he has collaborated with Prof. Bruce Haddock on an edited collection of essays entitled Thought Thinking: the Philosophy of Giovanni Gentile. This was published in late 2014 as a special double issue of Collingwood and British Idealism Studies, and will be republished as a book in June 2015.

The topic of the volume is the work of the Sicilian philosopher Giovanni Gentile (1875-1944). Thought Thinking – a title taken from one of the central concepts in Gentile’s philosophy – represents the first collection of its kind in English. It includes seven original essays by authors from the United Kingdom, Italy and the Netherlands, as well as four of Gentile’s essays, including three that have never before appeared in English translation. These essays cover a wide range of different aspects of Gentile’s philosophy, including his theories about ethics, education and history. As such it will be a valuable resource for students and existing specialists on Gentile’s work, and especially those who have hitherto known him only as ‘the philosopher of Fascism’.

Dr Wakefield's most recent major publication is the book Giovanni Gentile and the State of Contemporary Constructivism: A Study of Actual Idealist Moral Theory, which was published in early 2015. This book, based on Wakefield's PhD thesis, presents an original interpretation of Gentile's ideas about moral philosophy, situating him alongside modern-day philosophers such as Christine Korsgaard and Onora O'Neill.

Dr Wakefield is now at work on articles on a variety of topics in political and moral philosophy, including Kant, educational justice and the relationship between love and practical reason.

Dr Wakefield has previously taught on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Political Theory, Political Science, Government and Research Methods.
