Dr Gemma Whatling is a Medical Engineer specialising in Biomechanics and Orthopaedics. She teaches on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and is the Tutor for the MSc Orthopaedic Engineering degree programme. She is a Chartered Engineer, Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She received a first class honours MEng degree in Medical Engineering in 2005 and PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2009, both from Cardiff University.  Prior to her lecturing position, she was a Cardiff Academic Fellow progressing to a Senior Research Fellow within the Arthritis Research UK Biomechanics and Bioengineering Centre and undertook an International Travelling Fellowship from the British Orthopaedic Research Society in 2012. Her main research is on osteoarthritis, the effects of treatments, surgical efficacy and planning, functional classification and monitoring patient recovery. She is an active member of the Cardiff Institute of Tissue Engineering and Repair (CITER) Research Committee (http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/citer/), founding member and Chair of the Cardiff Women in Science (CWIS) Network (http://sites.cardiff.ac.uk/cwis/), University Athena Swan Steering Group and School of Engineering Athena Swan Committee.Mechanical, Manufacturing and Medical Engineering
