Trosolwyg

I have a background in both cognitive linguistics and language typology, with experience in first and second language acquisition, language and cognition, language processing, and the interaction between language learning and cognitive development. I approach linguistic typology from an experimental perspective and use a combination of both offline and online measures to explore how language variation may make a difference in language acquisition and processing, with a particular focus on the domain of motion.

Research summary

My research expertise lies in language and cognition, motion event processing, and experimental psychology. By taking an experimental approach, my research aims to uncover 1) how linguistic typological preferences interact with cognitive processing and 2) how typological differences between first and second language affect one’s cognitive development.

My doctorate is an interdisciplinary project that bridges the field of second/additional language acquisition and linguistic relativity research. It examines how multilingual individuals speak and think across different modalities (i.e., speech, processing times, and non-verbal cognitive behaviour), and the extent to which they recalibrate their cognitive dispositions towards perceptual phenomena as a result of learning multiple languages.

Before joining Cardiff, I held an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) post-doctoral Fellowship at the Institute of Education (IOE), University College London (UCL). The postdoctoral project “Exploring the Dynamics of Language and Thought in the Multilingual Mind: Effects of Multiple Language Learning” continues research on language acquisition and cognition, by using a novel, multidisciplinary approach combining production, comprehension, categorization, and perception of spatial concepts with eye-tracking. These efforts are aimed at transforming the study of language and cognition in the context of second language acquisition into a thoroughly interdisciplinary field. Bywgraffiad

Cwblheais fy MA mewn Ieithyddiaeth ym Mhrifysgol Hong Kong a chefais PhD mewn Seicoieithyddiaeth o Goleg Prifysgol Llundain yn 2020. Cyn ymuno â Phrifysgol Caerdydd fel darlithydd yn 2022, cynhaliais gymrodoriaeth ôl-ddoethurol ESRC yng Nghanolfan Ieithyddiaeth Gymhwysol UCL (https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=ES%2FV012274%2F1).

Meysydd goruchwyliaeth

Mae gen i ddiddordeb mewn goruchwylio prosiectau doethurol sy'n ymwneud yn fras â meysydd seicoieithyddiaeth ac ieithyddiaeth wybyddol, gan gynnwys pynciau fel iaith a gwybyddiaeth, prosesu digwyddiadau cynnig, dwyieithrwydd ac amlieithrwydd, a manteision gwybyddol dysgu iaith.
