Hasan Berkdem Sonder was born in Nicosia, Cyprus. He is currently a PhD candidate working on Electric Vehicles at the School of Engineering, Cardiff University. He is part of the Centre for Integrated Renewable Energy Generation and Supply (CIREGS) and Smart Grids and Electric Vehicle group since April, 2018. 

Berkem has received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Electrical Energy Systems from Cardiff University in 2016 and 2017, respectively. 

His research interests include power system analysis, sustainable transport, grid integration and control of renewable sources (particulary electric vehicles), power electronics, and smart grids. He is experienced in using different simulation software tools such as IPSA Power, PSCAD/EMTDC, Neplan, MATLAB, JavaScript andTyphoon HIL.

His main research interests include modelling of low voltage distribution networks and integrating Electric Vehicles and their charging modes (particularly DC fast/rapid charging) into the UK's electrical grids. His research topic also includes vehicle-to-grid, voltage control, network underground cable and transformer overloading mitigation techniques and battery storage solutions with the addition of rapid charging hubs.

CURRENT PROJECT (March-May 2021)

Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure and Planning in the UK - British Embassy in Beijing, China.

-Demonstrate UK capabilities in EV charging infrastructure deployment and charging technologies
-Demonstrate EVs' support to the grid through flexibility, V2G and ancillary services.
-Review of policy, regulations and interventions on EV charging infrastructure.
