Trosolwg

My research interest is based on age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of visual impairment in the UK. The aim of my project is to investigate the functioning of the outer retina using retinal imaging densitometry in AMD to better understand the disease process. I started my PhD in April 2020, supervised by Dr Ashley Wood and Professor Tom Margrain.

My research project is focused on investigating the regeneration rate of light sensitive visual pigment in the retina after exposure to light (known as the retinoid cycle and the process that allows our eye to adapt to seeing in the dark) to better understand the effect early age-related macular degeneration has on retinal function. I will be using an imaging retinal densitometer developed at Cardiff University. This device fuses elements of ophthalmic imaging and astronomy to measure the changes in visual pigment during dark adaptation through obtaining multi spectral images, providing objective topographical maps of pigment regeneration rates. By comparing these maps to conventional images (retinal photography and OCT) we hope to improve our understanding of how different features of AMD affect the retinoid cycle, which underpins dark adaptation, one of the earliest functions impaired during the AMD disease process.

Dysgu

I currently supervise the 2nd year contact lens and refraction clinics.
