Providing facilities to help researchers and industry work together, this unique facility will position Cardiff University as a leading centre for catalyst imaging and characterisation.
Electron Microscopy (EM) is a fundamental technique used by physical scientists (as well as in a broad range of other scientific and engineering disciplines) that allows study of materials at the nanoscale.
Outcome
The expected outcome of this project is to not only increase research income and remain competitive, but to provide access for local industries, institutes and businesses to cutting-edge analytical facilities.
It will also establish a research and development 'innovation headquarters’ for research which requiring these facilities, as well as creating a Welsh hub for EM expertise and skills development.
Funding
This EM facility was made possible by bringing together:
- £3.6M awarded from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO)
- £750,000 from the Wolfson Foundation
- £2.7M from HEFCW
- additional match funding from Cardiff University.
This funding and support will not only allow the Cardiff Catalysis Institute and the University as a whole to create a world class facility, but will also establish a much-needed base of advanced microscopy in Cardiff.
