Revised model of delivery for a post-Foundation pharmacist training programme

In 2021 CUREMeDE began some of the preliminary research into the new post-Foundation programme through the implementation of an online survey to gather stakeholder views’ (including from trainee pharmacists, pharmacists and employers) of such a programme and its delivery model.

The findings from the survey revealed that practice-based support and vocational experience are critical elements of an early career programme for pharmacists and that such a programme must provide equal and fair opportunities to all pharmacists, regardless of sector and employer.

Such findings provide essential context for the roll out of the new initial education and training standards for pharmacists (IETP standards) to ensure the existing workforce of qualified pharmacists are not left behind. In response to the survey results, Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) have devised a new post-Foundation programme that is designed to ensure that recently registered pharmacists have adequate opportunities to enhance and develop their knowledge and skills, and keep pace with the changing pharmacy landscape.

The post-Foundation programme spans over two-years and provides pharmacists with opportunities to develop their confidence and competence through dedicated support from experienced practitioners and teaching from a university. The pharmacists receive support from an educational supervisor (organised through the university) and a practice supervisor (organised through HEIW and the pharmacist’s employer).

The first cohort started in September 2022 and comprises approximately 35 pharmacists from hospital, community and general practice settings. The taught component is provided by the School of Pharmacy at Cardiff University.

This study will evaluate the implementation of this new post-Foundation programme, and how it supports pharmacists in developing their competence and confidence.
