Overview

I am a Research Associate in the Cardiff Unit for Research and Evaluation in Medical and Dental Education (CUREMeDE) based in the School of Social Sciences.

My research applies mixed methods to explore the training, wellbeing and preparedness-for-practice of healthcare professionals. I am currently involved in a number of ongoing projects related to undergraduate and postgraduate educational programmes in pharmacy, dentistry, and optometry. I am also on the SOCSI Research Ethics Committee.

I am also part-funded by the Office of Astronomy for Education, hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy. In this role, I am developing a review of evaluation practices across a network of over 100 National Astronomy Education Coordinators. The review will delve into the cultural and practical elements for evaluating educational interventions that vary substantially across countries and curricula. A key output of this review will be a framework and toolkit to aid astronomy education practitioners in evaluating the impact of their endeavours and that can permit country comparisons.

Prior to these roles, I completed my PhD in Astronomy and Physics Education at Cardiff University in 2019. My research evaluated the implementation of a series of educational activities that applied astronomy as a point of engagement to the compulsory secondary school physics curriculum. These activities were evaluated through a mixed method design (a validated survey, semi-structured focus groups and interviews and classroom observations) in order to assess their impact on students’ learning experiences and engagement in physics.
