Black Oot Here and There: Dreams O Us in Scotland and Wales
Building on Scottish and Welsh archives, Black history curriculum development, and strengthening the scholarly area of Black studies in devolved nations in Britain.
Despite their differences, Black Scottish and Welsh histories are interconnected, yet rarely researched or reflected on together.
Based on previous research and conversations between Black people in Scotland and Wales, this project involved the creation of a collaborative online exhibition about Being Black Oot Here and There. It features a wide range of newly created works by Black people in Scotland and Wales.
The exhibition builds on previous research, a book, Black Oot Here: Black Lives in Scotland (Bloomsbury, 2022), and a graphic novel and animation (co-created with Leeds Animation Workshop) – Black Oot Here: Dreams O Us, by project lead from the School of Journalism, Media and Culture, Dr Francesca Sobande, layla-roxanne hill, and illustrated by Chris Manson.

Connecting experiences
Black Oot Here and There focuses on the experiences and reflections of some Black people in/from Scotland and Wales while acknowledging the connectedness of experiences and histories elsewhere, such as internationalist solidarities and struggles for freedom around the world.
The exhibition, made public in December 2024, was produced in partnership with Artes Mundi, an international arts organisation based in Cardiff, Wales.
