UK-India Newton Researchers Link Workshop

Rational designing of catalysts for the sustainable production of fuels and chemicals.

Under the researcher links scheme offered within the Newton Fund, the British Council and the RSC will be holding a workshop on the above theme in Chennai, India from 1-4 November 2016.

The workshop is being coordinated by Dr M Sankar (Cardiff Catalysis Institute, Cardiff University, UK) and Professor P Selvam (National Centre for Catalysis Research, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), India), and will have contributions from other leading researchers: Professor R Catlow FRS (Cardiff University, UK), Professor M Davidson (University of Bath, UK), Professor B Viswanathan (IITM, India) and Dr R Vetrivel (Shell Technology Centre, India).

We are now inviting early career researchers (ECRs) from the UK and India to apply to attend this workshop. Coordinators will select 34 ECRs (17 from the UK and 17 from India).

The topics to be covered in this workshop are:

• Computational chemistry (Catalysis or catalytic materials focused)
• Heterogeneous catalysis (Renewable feedstock conversion)
• Homogeneous catalysis (Renewable feedstock conversion)
• Photo catalysis for fuel or chemicals production

The coordinators welcome applications from the potential participants who work in these topics. The major goal of this workshop is to establish a sustainable group of researchers who will develop strong link between legal and non-legal actors in academia, government, commerce and the NGO community. The workshop will focus on developing a network of researchers to promote future collaboration, in both researchers and education, between ECRs in the UK and India. The network will also have an important role in promoting engagement with the wider community. The workshop will also examine opportunities for career development amongst participating ECRs.

The workshop will be held in English. Participants will be expected to deliver a short presentation on their research area and its relationship to the workshop theme, and to take part in group-discussions over each of the four days of the workshop.

Location

The workshop will be held at the National Centre for Catalysis Research (NCCR), Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India.

Costs

The costs of travel, accommodation and meals during the workshop will be covered.

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration ECRs must have obtained a PhD within the 10 years prior to the workshop though, in exceptional cases, the participation of senior doctoral students may be authorised. Participants must also have links to UK or Indian higher education or research institutions. Although most participants are likely to come from within the academic sector, we would also encourage applications from ECRs working in industrial R&Ds. Applications are invited from researchers in all relevant disciplines.
