Volunteer as an Alumni Ambassador

We spoke to Elliot Howells (BSc 2016) at Cardiff University's Open Day (July 2019)

Register your interest to become an Alumni Ambassador and help inspire the next generation of Cardiff University students and alumni.

We offer a wealth of different opportunities for alumni volunteers to engage with prospective and current students as well as the wider university. We try to match Alumni Ambassador volunteers with the most suitable opportunities.

Throughout the year we also run and support many departments across the University with guest alumni speakers and events. We approach registered Alumni Ambassadors to take part based on the event. If you are particularly interested in these opportunities, please let us know and we will keep you informed as they become available.

As part of this exclusive community we are asking for platform ambassadors who will post content, promote the platform to their own offline Cardiff network and help us develop the platform with groups and events that are of interest to the community

Global Alumni Ambassador

  • Best suited for: any Alumni not based in the UK.
  • Time commitment: varies.

You can get involved as part of our global alumni community even if you can’t come home to Cardiff. We support international events with the University’s International Office throughout the year where you will meet prospective students, answer their questions based on your experience, and represent Cardiff University in your home country. You might even be asked to be our point of contact for other University visits to your region, or to host “returner” events introducing recent graduates to the local Cardiff alumni community.

We organise a range of events throughout the year around the globe. These include:

  • pre-departure events
  • international recruitment events

We also offer some virtual opportunities which allow prospective students and parents to connect with you to learn about your experience at Cardiff and beyond.

Attend an Open Day or Offer Holder Day

  • Best suited for: Alumni who graduated up to 5/10 years ago (depending on school).
  • Time commitment: two to seven hours.

Open Days and Offer Holder Days offer prospective students the opportunity to explore the University campus and facilities and find out what it’s like to study at Cardiff and get better acquainted with their academic school. On these days you will meet prospective students, answer questions about your own Cardiff University experience, and speak to prospective students and their parents at talks organised by your school.  Your school may also organise for you to take part in a short talk or Q&A session. Visitors find the advice and experience of recent graduates invaluable, and you’ll have the opportunity to offer tangible examples of how your time at Cardiff has benefitted you early in your career.

Open days usually happen 4 times a year and Offer holder events occur between December and March on various days.

Provide coaching and expertise to our Enterprise and Start-up students

  • Best suited for: entrepreneurial alumni involved in new businesses/start-ups or who have experiences in these areas.

Our Enterprise and Start-Up team support students to develop skills for business start-ups, self-employment and innovation. Our students are talented and creative innovators with a real passion for exploring new ideas. We’re looking for alumni coaches to encourage and guide them on their journey by reviewing business plans, preparing feedback and suggestions, and offering general sector insight.

Offer informal mentoring

  • Best suited for: all alumni.
  • Time commitment: as little as one hour.

Taking place on our new digital professional networking platform, Cardiff Connected, you can offer your expertise or seek guidance from fellow alumni.

Unlike our formal mentoring programme which takes place over a 4-month period, this type of mentoring should be quick, flexible one-time sessions. It may be to provide a CV review, give advice on interview tips, make introductions to your own network, or even just have a chat about your industry or job role. This is a great way to build your networks within the alumni community and help those who need it, without committing to a longer, fixed-term mentoring relationship.

Join our student mentoring programme

  • Time commitment: a minimum of 5 mentoring sessions between December and April.
  • Support: dedicated project lead to offer guidance to you and your mentee throughout.
  • Recruitment timeline: September to November with any expressions of interest submitted after this time considered for the following year.

We are eager to hear from alumni who would like to volunteer their time to support the next generation of Cardiff University graduates.

The Cardiff University Career Mentoring Programme is run by the Work Experience team and provides an opportunity for you to work with a studentwho has expressed an interest in learning more about your industry area. We hand match mentors and student mentees and supply you with a framework for your conversations.

Offer a work placement or internship

  • Best suited for: Alumni in suitable work positions.
  • Time commitment: can vary, placements can last a few days or up to a year.

Internships are run through the Work Experience team who work with employers to connect them with Cardiff students and recent graduates who are looking for meaningful work experience.

Support university strategy

  • Best suited for: Alumni who occupy a senior role or are influential in a particular field.
  • Time commitment: variable.

Universities are collaborative spaces, and we welcome alumni to share their expertise and advice in several different spaces. This could mean amongst other, sitting on Advisory Boards or University Court, being a critical friend for the creation of new courses and assisting in course learning outcomes or being part of an Interview panel.
