1. Submission

  • Submissions should be in the form of a .doc/.docx file and emailed to
  • The accepted language of submissions is British English and Welsh.
  • All submissions should be accompanied by an abstract in English of up to 200 words. A translation of the abstract to a relevant second language may be provided by the author if appropriate.
  • Submissions should not contain any reference to the identity of the author or their institution to facilitate double-blind reviewing.
  • A separate document (.doc/.docx) detailing author, title, affiliation and postal address should be submitted with the manuscript. This document should also contain a biography of max. 150 words outlining the lead author’s experience, research area and current projects.
  • For submissions containing figures and graphs, these should be both embedded in the manuscript and sent as a separate document (.doc/.docx).
  • Photographs, tables and maps should also be embedded in the text and sent as a separate document (JPEG).

2. Conditions of submission

  • The work must not have been published elsewhere in a similar form.
  • All authors have consented to the submission of the manuscript.
  • The content of the submission pays due regard to ethical concerns and contains no unlawful or libellous statements.
  • Authors have obtained permission for reproduction of copyright material.

3. Style

  • Text should be Times New Roman, size 12, with 1.5 line spacing and wide margins.
  • Page numbers should be centred at the bottom of the page.
  • Articles should not exceed 8,000 words, including footnotes if used.
  • Citations in ancient languages should be accompanied by a translation.
  • Abbreviations, acronyms and symbols may be used at the editor’s discretion.
  • Dates should follow the format of 31 January 1990.
  • Figures, plates and tables should be numbered in separate sequential series.
  • Headings should be bold and subheadings italicised.
  • Any acknowledgments should be placed after the main body of the text.
  • The journal uses two referencing styles: consult the guidelines below.

4. Referencing guidelines

Editors may be contacted with queries regarding the appropriate referencing style. The above links provide guides to the two styles used.

5. Reviewing Process

Once you have submitted your paper to the journal it will be sent to the relevant discipline’s sub-editor. Each submission is read by at least one member of the editorial board before it is sent out to review to ensure that it complies with our guidelines.

The peer review process enables the editorial team to maintain a high quality of content in the journal’s publications. Each paper is assigned two reviewers who have expertise in the subject matter of the article. The whole process is anonymous or ‘double-blind’, so reviewers will not know whose article they are reading, nor will authors know who has reviewed their work.

Referees’ reports will then be considered by a panel drawn from the editorial board before a piece is accepted for publication in the series. We aim to give initial feedback within two months, but this may take longer if we need to contact an external reviewer outside Cardiff University. The authors will be told immediately of the outcome and given the feedback reports.
