Religion and Culture in Late Antiquity - 20 credits (RTT134)

This module deals with the period (c. AD 100-700) when the modern 'western' world emerged in the regions and cultures around the Mediterranean, and with the origins of Christianity, Judaism, Islam and post-classical Paganism. Students are introduced to the historical context of religions in Late Antiquity and to contemporary scholarship in the field of Late Antique studies. The module will enable students to gain an understanding of the religious, cultural and political processes at work in this period, and to develop a variety of relevant skills and methodologies (linguistic, historical, archaeological, sociological and anthropological).
