The Cellular Basis of Neurodegeneration

Introduction

The Cellular Basis of Neurodegeneration:

Dysfunctions in a number of possible ion channels have been implicated in neurodegeneration.

Aims of Project

This project will focus on plasma membrane K+ channels and channels in subcellular organelles such as the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria. Understanding the links between modified channel function and activation of the cell death pathway will be the prime focus. Methods such as patch-clamp electrophysiology, planar bilayer work, RT-PCR and apoptotic assays will be utilised. Cell lines (e.g. NTERA2) and primary cells will be used. The long term goal is to identify possible ion channel targets for therapeutic intervention in debilitating central nervous system disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.
