Matthew Machin completed his BA in Music at the University of Plymouth in 2006 and was then awarded a Masters degree in Ethnomusicology at Cardiff University in 2009. He is currently in the final year of his PhD at Cardiff. His research concerns flamenco, regionalism and politics in Andalusia (Spain), and he has recently conducted a period of field research in Granada. Matthew frequently presents at music and ethnomusicology conferences, and has a wide range of teaching experience at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level. He has also been a practising musician for the majority of his life, specialising in classical guitar and more recently flamenco guitar. He has also taught guitar for many years. His love of music from around the world has inspired him to practise other traditions such as the Japanese shakuhachi, Indian sitar and Indonesian gamelan at some point during his academic career.
