Short business course helps refugees and asylum seekers enhance their business skills

The students, staff and business school society students partaking in the Realising your Business Potential module.

Lifelong Learning and Cardiff Business School have worked with the Welsh Refugee Council and students from the Cardiff Business School Society to deliver a free business course for entrepreneurs.

The Realising your Potential in Business module was taught in seven sessions and developed the knowledge, understanding and skills related to starting up a business venture.

The learning experience was characterised by idea development and product and service testing through customer feedback and prototype creation. The final projects were shared in a pitch assessment.

Professor Tim Edwards, Pro-Dean for Research, Impact and Innovation at Cardiff Business School delivered this course and commented:

“Initiatives such as this demonstrate how entrepreneurship and innovative thinking can really make a difference. The refugee students involved in this scheme have grown in confidence through the opportunity to improve their situation. Social enterprise can play an important role in helping individuals and communities to overcome obstacles.”

Students presented their business ideas during their last lesson which became a celebration of their achievements. Romeo Salem from Cardiff commented: “The Realising your Potential in Business course was great! We learnt how to make our business ideas work. If anyone has a chance to take this course do it, you won’t regret it”
