Audiences and News

Friday 2:00 - 3:30 PM

Room E/1.02

The audience is centrally significant to journalism and media studies, although its character as well as relations with news media are both shifting with the emergence of digital media.  Specific themes considered included: the impact of social media and journalisms’ relations with audiences; users assessments of the journalistic quality of various formats and services on the internet; a longitudinal study of cross media challenges facing news audiences as they make choices in ‘the supermarket of news’; the implications of young peoples’ lack of interest in the news for the future of democracy, and finally; a study of ‘Tailor made news’ where users of mobile devices act as their own gatekeeper in electing news choice.
