Teaching is organised into the equivalent of 12 modules, (normally 6 in each semester) being taken per year. Modules are assessed using a variety of different methods including formal written examinations, case studies, assignments and project work.

High Quality Teaching

The School of Engineering is recognised as one of the best resourced Engineering schools within the British university system in terms of facilities, research and teaching. The quality of our teaching has been independently assessed by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and we have received the following gradings:

  • Civil Engineering - EXCELLENT
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering - EXCELLENT
  • Electronic Engineering - EXCELLENT
  • Environmental Engineering - EXCELLENT
  • Manufacturing Engineering - EXCELLENT
  • Mechanical Engineering - EXCELLENT

An "Excellent" in the Welsh system is equivalent to between 22 and 24 points in the English system. The teaching on the Architectural Engineering and Computer Systems Engineering schemes has also been assessed and has been graded as satisfactory. Integrated has not been separately assessed as its teaching is an amalgam of the teaching on the Electronic, Mechanical and Manufacturing degree schemes.

Accreditation

At the Cardiff School of Engineering you will study for an accredited degree. All our degree schemes are approved under the new Standards and Routes to Registration (SARTOR) regulations introduced by the Engineering Council. This means that our degrees are recognised by the professional engineering bodies as providing a suitably high standard of education for Chartered Engineers.

League Tables

The School has also received independent recognition for the quality of its undergraduate provision. Our degree programmes for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical and Electronic Engineering are recognised as being amongst the best in the UK , as ranked by league tables produced by the various educational supplements. The Times Higher has rated Civil Engineering at Cardiff as top in the UK for the last five years and since 1997 all of our programmes have achieved the top position in at least one major league table. Mechanical Engineering was recently rated equal top in the UK by the Guardian.
