Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD)
Introduction
WISERD is jointly funded from the Welsh Assembly Government (HEFCW) and the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to draw together and build upon the existing expertise in quantitative and qualitative research methods and methodologies at Cardiff, Swansea, Aberystwyth, Bangor and Glamorgan Universities.
The strategic aim of WISERD is to establish itself as a sustainable research institute built on the active engagement of social science staff from across the Welsh HE sector and the involvement of a complex set of audiences/users in the public and private sectors. To this end, WISERD is embarking on an ambitious data integration, primary research and capacity building programme in Wales.
One of the principal objectives of the data integration programme is to create a framework and platform for collaborative research taking place across WISERD based on the collection, management, analysis, dissemination and discovery of primary and secondary quantitative and qualitative data sets for Wales. The primary focus is the development of a collaborative virtual research environment and associated tools and resources to aid collective working and data sharing across Wales. This will act as a gateway to information by channeling all searches through a single geoportal containing a single catalog. The geoportal will support social science researchers by providing a platform for integrating, managing and disseminating quantitative and qualitative socio-economic data in Wales.
