Professor Yap was until recently, director of poverty reduction at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asian and Pacific. He currently acts as independent researcher and consultant and has held positions with the UNCHS in Nairobi and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Bangkok, Thailand.

His expertise lies in the areas of housing conditions in Asia, urban low-income housing policies, urban poverty and urban poverty reduction strategies in Asia, Urbanization in Southeast Asia and urban governance in Southeast Asia.
