Geography at Cardiff University has been ranked in the world’s Top 100 in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

Published annually by global higher education analysts QS, the rankings provide independent comparative analysis of university programmes worldwide. Cardiff University now has eight subjects ranked in the global Top 100.

The result recognises the strength of geography at Cardiff University and reinforces its position as one of the University’s internationally recognised subject areas, as well as its contribution to the University’s wider research and teaching profile.

Geography addresses many of the issues shaping society today, including climate change, environmental change, sustainability, inequality and the relationship between people, place and planet.

Through research, teaching and public engagement, geography continues to make an important contribution to the University’s academic community, helping deepen understanding of the social and environmental challenges affecting lives and places across the world.

Planning and urban design make an important contribution to Architecture / Built Environment, ranked =50. The subjects connect design, development and policy, and play a central role in addressing challenges such as housing, transport, regeneration, sustainability and the long-term resilience of communities.

Professor Gill Bristow, Head of the School of Geography and Planning, said: “To be placed in the world’s top 100 for both Geography and Architecture / Built Environment is an outstanding result and one that reflects the quality and relevance of the work taking place here.

“Geography helps us understand some of the biggest challenges facing society, including climate change, environmental pressures, inequality, sustainability and the changing relationship between people and place. This ranking shows the excellence and impact of our research and teaching, and the dedication of our staff and student community.”

QS uses five key metrics to compile the subject rankings. Reputation indicators are based on responses from employers and academics worldwide, while Citations per Paper and H-Index measure research impact and productivity. International Research Network is used to assess cross-border research collaboration.

From August 2026, teaching in human geography will be part of the new School of Social and Spatial Sciences.
