We are an exciting interdisciplinary research network established in 2024 to bring together experts who explore past and present human relationships with unexpected and unnatural phenomena, ranging from the scary to the sublime.
Based within the School of History, Archaeology and Religion and the School of English, Communication and Philosophy, we draw on scholars from across Cardiff University, the University’s Special Collections, and the Centre for Lifelong Learning.
From miracles, relics and saints to witches, fairies and the undead, we bring together students of the supernatural in its many forms.
We draw on members with an academic interest in:
- the supernatural in history, literature, and film
- the archaeology and material culture of the supernatural
- the supernatural across different faith traditions
- the sociology and psychology behind supernatural belief systems
- navigating supernatural truth claims in law or politics
- the testing or challenging of supernatural truth claims
We foster collaboration, the sharing of ideas, and examining the cultural, religious, historical, and social dimensions of the supernatural in all its diversity.
