Data justice: understanding datafication in relation to social justice

The aim of this project is to understand data systems and processes in relation to how they impact on particular communities, what they mean for questions of fairness and equality, and with what implications for established social and economic rights.

The project relies on a mixed methodology that combines qualitative and computational methods in order to explore practices, experiences, technology and policy implications. It makes use of desk-based research together with interviews and focus groups and combined with reverse engineering or black-box testing together with participatory design sessions.

Output

The research team will produce a combination of eighteen academic and practitioner-oriented deliverables to ensure engagement and impact of the project findings. In addition to conventional academic publications, this includes workshops with practitioners, civil society groups and impacted communities, policy recommendations, and software development based on social justice-informed design sessions.
