What you’ll learn

This 2-day face to face course will facilitate learning, understanding and practical application of a comprehensive set of communication tools to help with all conversations.

The ‘Cardiff 6 point toolkit’, a collection of effective communication skills’ tools is central to the teaching and provides opportunity for recognisable scholarship and academic output from the courses.  Using the Cardiff 6 point toolkit as a basis for teaching enables us to demonstrate the tools in all the different types of consultation that may occur in palliative and end of life care.

Topics covered

Please note: this course outline (and fee) only relates to Day 1 of a 2-day course. We would recommend delegates attend the full programme if possible.

In Day 1 we will cover:

  • basic communication techniques and using the Cardiff 6 point toolkit
  • breaking bad news

In Day 2 we will cover:

  • managing uncertainty
  • managing the emotional response to life limiting illness i.e. anger, denial and collusion
  • starting sensitive conversations about plans for future care and death

How you will learn

We will use a combination of a large group session, an interactive demonstration and small group work practising and reflecting on skills. All the group work will be sensitively facilitated by experienced facilitators. We will ask you to reflect on the impact the sessions will have on your day to day practice at the time and by questionnaire 6 weeks after the teaching.

Benefits

Delegates will benefit from increased knowledge and confidence in their communication skills when caring for patients with palliative care needs. Reflection on communication skills strategies and ethical frameworks underlying practice will enhance performance and the session of improving an aspect of palliative care delivery within the team or setting will benefit clinical services.

This 2-day face-to-face course will support your understanding and practical application of a comprehensive set of communication tools to help with conversations that may occur when caring for patients with palliative and end of life needs.
